For a while, I was confused as to what the difference between RSS and Atom were when I would sign up for a web feed. Some websites offer users a choice in formatting. A web feed, which is sometimes mistakenly referred to as simply “RSS”, is a standardized method used to syndicate web content. Different services can aggregate many of these feeds. A desktop app like NetNewsWire and web-based services like iGoogle, Bloglines, Google Reader, and Netvibes are common feed aggregators.

Essentially, RSS is the “original” family of web feeds developed throughout the early 00s with the Atom specification being the “fresh face”, offering even more clarity around things like content types and date formatting. So really, there’s no difference that you should be concerned about. Many big sites will only offer their content through RSS 2.0 but Atom is technically the “better” solution going forward.

Credit to the web feed Wikipedia page for relaying most of this pretty useless information.

It was the Too Old to Work, Too Young to Die 7″. Catchy street-punk mixed with pop-punk.

When my first girlfriend dumped me at 16 and I had to take the train home from Worcester, I recognized the singer and sat next to him and told him my story. I don’t think he cared. Missed their last show in 2002 because I wanted to sleep in.

#4) Ringers – Curses

Out of the 5 bands on my list, I’ve seen Ringers the most live. They’re still active and you can catch them at a smelly basement in Boston every other month. They usually play at The Fest in Gainesville, FL every year. Last year they played at some ding bar at 11am. Former members of Sirens, Pinkerton Thugs and probably 10 other bands. The dude Ross ran Regeneration Records in Allston for a while. Last time I checked it’s only a tattoo shop.

#3) The Showcase Showdown – Appetite of Kings

I wished I had seen The Showcase Showdown in their day. They broke up when I was in my early teens and the shows they played look fun in photos. Dirty pogo-punk with cute Victoria on bass. Members play in the current band Spazz. Favorite tracks: Oi Oi Deacon and Police, Police.

#2) The Pinkerton Thugs – End of an Era

The Pinkerton Thugs recently “reformed’ to play some shows around town. I’ve been to one and it was so-so for a matinee on a Sunday. This record came out on Go Kart. Yeah, technically this band is probably from Maine but they have a Boston PO Box listed in the liner notes so that’s good enough for me. Really good songs.

#1) Dropkick Murphys – Do or Die

Before these dudes became every shlock jock’s favorite band in Boston, they put out Do or Die in 1998. Most songs were written by Rick Barton who is in some other band these days. They would lose original members on every release hereafter and now you’ve got one original member – Ken Casey, the bassist. This album is still perfect 10 years later.

From Wikipedia:

Lanemeyer was a pop punk band from northern New Jersey.

Lanemeyer was formed in 1997. Taking their name from John Cusack’s character (Lane Meyer) in the film Better Off Dead…, Lanemeyer were known for their humor and love of comedy. They broke up in 2001 after touring with bands such as The Lawrence Arms, Bigwig, River City High, Whippersnapper, and many more. After the breakup, several members continued to perform with other bands, such as The Forever Endeavor and Day At The Fair (Rushmore Records). Lanemeyer has reunited several times to play single shows, with varying member lineups.

Lanemeyer’s Stories For the Big Screen was huge for me when I was a teenager. It was infectious pop-punk about girls, breaking up, and growing up. The singing wasn’t the best, their playing wasn’t top notch, but there was always something about these songs that just clicked with not only me, but others I met along the way who also had some weird attachment to this band.

So here it is: Lanemeyer - Stories For the Big Screen

Called in sick today with a bad cold and might have to tomorrow as well - sucks. Tried to make it all better with a scratch ticket (an expensive one at that) but it was a loser. Market Basket Cherry Night Time, make me loopy.

Still a consistent flow of people coming into my blog for my web developer toolbar tutorials. I hope they’re enjoying it. I consider doing a part 3 but I just have no ambition to blog these days.

Did you know you can recycle your old cell phones and media players for free with Apple’s recycling program?

Tim Gunn and Project Runway are fucking cool.

I wish Dennis Kucinich had gotten the democratic nomination.

Facebook is the lingua franca for social media sites now. I get invites from co-workers; almost one a week. But can Virb take over yet?

Grateful I still have a job and didn’t have any assets in the stock market.

I want a video game system. I think it will either be an original Nintendo NES or Diablo II (PC).

Crazy car I saw in Woburn Mall’s parking lot two weeks ago:

Here’s a blog I will be following: Dinkstrong. What is it? Well, it’s about a girl named Danielle (nickname: Dink) who has Hodgkins Lymphoma. I’ve ‘known’ Danielle through the TonyandPals.com messageboard for years and years. I’ve seen her posts about music, opinions and life in general and finally met her about a year ago at a party in Watertown. It seemed like we talked all night as if we had so much catching up to to, even though we don’t know each other at all. Today, I’ve found myself thinking of her a lot. I’ve never known anyone (who was this young) who has had cancer believe it or not.

Anyways, she’s started a blog about her experiences to come. I will definitely be reading as will many others. Will you?

This thing just sits in my car’s console and gets no usage. It looks used, but only because I’m always throwing stuff on top of it. I bought this a little over a year ago at Staples in Salem, NH. The product line has been updated recently to a slimmer black version and goes for $179 at Staples but I’m sure you can find it cheaper elsewhere. I’ll let it go for $50ppd or best offer. That’s pretty good!

I like to drink. I like to gamble. If I have a chance to go down to Foxwoods, I go. It’s not often people want to trek 200 miles to lose money, though. So a less-than-decent substitute is the Horizon’s Edge Casino Cruise in Lynn, MA. The whole operation is pretty poor, but tolerable…until a couple of weeks ago when I boarded the boat on Thursday night. The event was sponsored by North Shore 104.9, who my father won tickets from.

Previous to this night, I had gone on this boat only to be told that certain table games simply wouldn’t be open due to low attendance. Seemed to make sense for poker, but when lots of people wanted to play roulette, the table remained closed. I assumed they didn’t have the staff on hand. No mention of these possibilities on their relic website. Free drinks come around way less frequently than actual casinos, even when the ratio of staff to customers seems to be in the boat’s favor compared to an actual casino. Oh, and free drinks only applies to domestic keg beer.

So come to find out, the radio station gave away lots of tickets for this particular Thursday and the boat was packed. Definitely sold out capacity. Everyone ate the buffet and waited around 45 minutes after the boat was supposed to leave port, ordering drinks while not knowing what was going on. No one knew since the no one on the staff elected to use the boat’s intercom system to make an announcement. Finally, at 7:10, we found out we weren’t leaving port. We didn’t find out from a gaming employee but from someone who worked at the buffet who happened to be talking to her co-worker. I was lucky enough to overhear. Our waitress let us know 15 minutes later, though.

It was hard to believe that they weren’t aware of this “mechanical issue” before they happened to board 200+ people on this boat. I wouldn’t doubt that necessary staff just didn’t show up. They did not offer any complimentary drinks to us. They did not refund the port/fuel tax even though we did not go anywhere. They did not even personally tell us this in anyway - at least not to my table. We won’t have to pay the the taxes next time. What if there is no next time? What if we came down from Portland, Maine? How do you treat those customers? The worst possible thing that they could have done, though was not respond to my complaint email. I reached out to them using the address listed on their website and basically got told to go fuck myself.

Easily one of the most unprofessional businesses running. I wouldn’t recommend to anyone unless they had free passes and even then, it’s a toss up.
